Calibration Tools for RF Shim at Very High Field with Multiple Element RF Coils: From Ultra Fast Local Relative Phase to Absolute Magnitude B1+ Mapping

چکیده
Introduction: At very high magnetic field, strong B1 heterogeneities occur in human MR images as RF wavelength becomes equal to, or smaller than, the size of the imaged target, interacting with lossy and dielectric properties of biological tissues(1,2). Different RF Shim techniques can be used in order to mitigate B1 inhomogeneities, which have considerable differences in their respective hardware and B1 calibration requirements, especially with large numbers of elements in a transmit coil array(3). In this study we propose a comprehensive B1 phase shim strategy, considering gradual solutions for increasing B1 Shim demands and for different hardware setups as shown in Table 1. We introduce fast B1 calibration tools utilizing some linear algebra formalism with transmit coil arrays, ranging from simple (relative B1 phase) to more demanding measures (absolute B1 magnitude). We show that local B1 Phase Shim can be performed in less than one minute with a 16 elements transmit coil array, with dramatic gain in local B1+ magnitude.

Transmit SENSE. For this purpose, an ROI was drawn in the occipital lobe (white ROI Fig3) and two B1 Phase Shim solutions were calculated and applied in order to obtain an homogeneous B1 magnitude within this ROI: one based on the estimated B1 maps, another one based on the measured B1 maps. As can be seen in Fig3 (in degrees), both B1 Shim sets produced tremendous improvement in B1 efficiency ...

Introduction: In order to optimally combine signals received from an array coil, the sensitivities of each element have to be known. Acquiring these receive sensitivities is especially challenging at ultra high field conditions using transmit-receive arrays (TRA), since signal voids induced by destructive interferences of the transmit B1 fields cause strong local noise amplification in the obta...

Introduction: One of the major causes of image non-uniformity in MRI is due to the existence of non-homogeneity in RF receive and transmit. This can be the most effective source of error in quantitative studies in MRI imaging. Part of this non-homogeneity demonstrates the characteristics of RF coil and part of it is due to the interaction of RF field with the material being imaged...

Introduction: Because of the inherent advantage of improved SNR, ultra-high field (3T~9.4T) MRI technology and applications have been accelerated these years. However many engineering challenges have arisen from high-operation frequencies. One major challenge is the difficulty of designing large-size RF coils with high-resonance frequencies. In addition, it has been shown that the homogeneity o...
متن کاملRapid B1 mapping in the presence of B0 variations
Introduction: Accurate calibration of the radio frequency (RF) magnetic field (B1) is important for many applications, including quantitative MRI. This is particularly true at high fields (≥3T), where large B1 variations can cause flip angle variations that confound quantitative results. The most widely used "B1 mapping" method is the double angle method (DAM) [1]. While DAM is straight-forward...
